The United Kingdom has been awarded the Rugby League World Cup ahead of Australia for 2013.

Australia had been hoping to hold the next tournament after the success of the 2008 competition which Steeden provided all the match and Official replica balls for, but it was decided in Singapore that the World Cup would go to the United Kingdom.

Deputy RLIF chairman and Executive Chairman for the RFL said:

“It is a great boost for rugby league in the northern hemisphere to secure the World Cup in 2013, I thought that the 2008 tournament was an outstanding success and our goal is to build on that success and to deliver a profitable tournament that further enhances the international prestige of Rugby League”

The United Kingdom hosted the Tournament in 2000, but it was hampered by bad weather and left the RFL with serious debts but after the success in Australia and increased global interest in the game with 19.2 million tuning into last years tournament worldwide the RFL are more optimistic that the United Kingdom will put on a better show in 2013.

The event will add to the U.K’s crowded sporting calendar for the decade ahead, with the Olympics in 2012, the Rugby Union World Cup in 2015 and the possibility of the Football World Cup in 2018.
