Steeden sponsored Gateshead Thunder have appointed ex-Salford and Widnes manager Steve McCormack as head coach with immediate effect.

McCormack coached Scotland at the 2008 world cup and is looking forward diving straight in at the deep end with a 5th round challenge cup tie against Oldham on Saturday as his first game.

“When (club owner) Steve Garside approached me, it didn’t take long to make my mind up,” he said.

“I can’t wait to meet the players and staff and get on with the job”

Gateshead has reappointed Chris Hood as there assistant coach. They currently are 8th in the Championship with only 2 wins from the first seven games and McCormack is keen to work with Hoods team as well as his backroom staff.

“I have spoken with Chris Hood in detail and I am looking forward to working with him. This is a really big opportunity.”

Hood has also made clear his desire to continue working with the club.

“I recognise and respect the experience that Steve McCormack has” said Hood.

We have spoken in detail and I am very keen to work with him to build on the start that we have had to the season so far.”
