Cambridge clinch league win

Steeden sponsored Cambridge University ARLFC have won the BUCS midlands league for the first time in ten years.

Cambridge clinched the title in a winner takes all game against Notts Trent Uni on Wednesday afternoon finishing 12-0 champions.

Notts are the only team to have beaten Cambridge this year and the Green Lions were expecting nothing but a tough test. The game kicked off on a soggy pitch and both teams traded completed sets before Cambridge’s kicking game got Notts pinned in there own 22 for most of the first half. The Lions converted this pressure through two penalties to open up a 4-0 lead.

Half time came around and both teams regrouped and the played out the next 20 minutes with plenty of brutal defence. The deadlock was finally broken after a penalty conceded by Notts led to scrum half Rupert Wingate-Saul scoring next to the posts after some evasive running and fancy footwork. Cambridge added another penalty to extend there lead to 12-0.

Notts Trent however refused to give up without a fight and repeatedly raided the Cambridge line in the last 5 minutes but the Green Lions’ trademark solid defence which has earned them the BUCS title held strong and they rode out the storm right up until the final whistle.

Head Coach John Evans made his pride in his player’s performance well known.

“This was the litmus test for us today as Notts Trent is a good rugby league side, fit aggressive and like us in that they will play every set as if their life depends on it.”
