New Zealand stun Australia
posted: 25 November 2008
New Zealand caused one of the biggest upsets in rugby league history on Saturday when they were crowned World Champions over tournament favourites Australia at the Suncorp Stadium in Brisbane.
Despite leading 16-12 at half time, holders and hosts Australia were shocked to go down 20-34 losers to the Kiwi’s, who win the world cup for the first time in there history and relieve Australia of the trophy they have held since 1975.
Aussie captain Darren Lockyer who won the man of the match award kept Australia in it up to half time, scoring two tries, but accepted his award, along with the runners up trophy with understandable disappointment at his team’s inability to win a tournament which many had deemed a “victory procession” for Australia.
A half empty Suncorp Stadium saw New Zealand lift the trophy after some controversial decisions by video referee Ganson and ultimately some fine rugby from the Kiwis.
