Super League weekend round up

Wakefield 22-48 Castleford

Wakefield Wildcats let slip an early lead to give Castleford Tigers there first win of the season against them. Although the win does nothing for the Tigers table position, it avenges the defeat at the hand of the Wildcats 2 years ago which saw them relegated.

Sean Gleeson and Sam Obst put the Wildcats ahead early on but their lead was cancelled out by efforts from Tigers Stuart Donlan and Joe Westerman. Castleford added 4 more scores through Luke Dorn, Andrew Henderson, Craig Huby and Scott Moore and Kirk Dixon showed a fine display of kicking to convert all 8 tries.

St Helens 17-16 Warrington

In the Super Leagues other big game this weekend St Helens won a thriller against Warrington to stay 2 points clear of Leeds at the top of the Super League.

It looked as if the Wolves had ended Saints run of 18 consecutive wins and also secured there first win at Knowsley Road in the Super League era as they led 16-10 with four minutes to go.

Wolves had got there lead through a brace of tries from Chris Riley and one from Matt King. The Saints pushed the Wolves all the way however with tries from Ade Gardener, his 27th of the season and Keiron Cunningham scoring on his 300th Super League appearance.

Saints struck late as though in the driving rain as Lee Gilmour barged over for a try, converted by Sean Long (pictured) to level the match and give hope to the Saints. Wolves attempted to finish the match off as Frances Meli dropped for the Saints goal only to see his effort fall short

But it was to be Longs day as he slotted home a last-minute 40 meter drop-goal to take the game by a point and end a scintillating game of rugby.
